Purpose
The purpose of this Faith and Life Forum is to explore, with facilitators Barry Bartel and Alice Price, how we communicate with and care for one another.
About Our Facilitators Barry Bartel is an attorney in Denver and member of Glennon Heights Mennonite Church. Barry has moved between church leadership roles and law practice. He has served as project coordinator for MCC in Haiti, as country director for MCC in Bolivia, and as president of Bethel College. He was the first moderator when Mountain States Mennonite Conference was formed, and has been active in congregational and conference leadership. Barry’s interest in law stems from a desire to help people assess and resolves disputes. He is author of Let’s Talk: Communication Skills and Conflict Transformation (available from MennoMedia), a Scripture-based Sunday School curriculum written for high school youth and also used in adult settings, and has led workshops on congregational conflict and communication. Barry grew up in La Junta and is married to Brenda. Barry and Brenda have a married son Jordan (a flight instructor in Oregon) and a daughter Leah (a junior at Bethel College).
Alice Price has been practicing mediation for about 30 years, primarily in southern Colorado and with a 4-year stint on the national staff of MCC's Mennonite Conciliation Service. She has a law degree and has specialized in civil rights, family law and non-profit associations. She founded Center for Restorative Programs in Alamosa, a youth-serving restorative justice program. She serves as Local Coordinator for the MVS unit in Alamosa and serves on the leadership team of Anabaptist Fellowship of Alamosa. She is married to Andy Zaugg and they have one daughter, Isabelle Zaugg, and two grandchildren living in D.C.
Who Should Attend
Each church should plan to send several representatives. Faith & Life Forums are an important part of Mountain States Mennonite Conference. The By-Laws state that “member congregations of Mountain States Mennonite Conference shall participate in regular meetings for discernment of faith and life issues.”
What We Will Do
Worship, Share, Pray, Discuss, Learn.
Cost
There is no cost for the Forum. You will be invited to make a donation for the lunch.
Travel Expenses
We will have a travel pool for all of the participating churches. Each
church will be assessed mileage for one vehicle (whether you carpool or
drive separately) and the total miles will be entered into a pool from
which those at a closer distance will pay into the pool and those from
greater distances will receive some support for travel. For questions,
contact Karen Martin, Conference Administrator.
